STMA, MiLB Announce 2017 ‘Sports Turf Managers of the Year’
The Sports Turf Managers Association (STMA) and Minor League Baseball (MiLB) have announced the 2017 “Sports Turf Manager of the Year” award winners.
Award winners include:
- Triple-A: Matt Parrott, Charlotte Knights (Charlotte, N.C.)
- Double-A: Ray Sayre, Pensacola Blue Wahoos (Pensacola, Fla.)
- Single-A: Mike Williams, Charleston RiverDogs (Charleston, S.C.)
- Short Season or Rookie: Ryan Olszewski, Mahoning Valley Scrappers (Niles, Ohio)
Since 2000, the STMA and MiLB have awarded members who manage fields in Triple-A, Double-A, Single-A and Short Season or Rookie divisions based on cultural practices, game day routine, resource utilization, staff management and the groundskeeper’s involvement in the sports turf industry. Winners are selected via a 13-member awards committee, compiled by STMA. Award recipients will receive this honor at the Major League Baseball Winter Meetings Banquet on Monday, Dec. 11, in Orlando, Florida.
Industry Mourns Loss of Luke Kellerman, Broncos Assistant Turf Manager
Luke Kellerman, assistant turf manager of the Denver Broncos’ Sports Authority Field at Mile High, died from colon cancer Thursday, Oct. 26, at the age of 34. ESPN paid tribute to Kellerman, who inspired the Broncos’ “Fight Like A Bronco” campaign which honors cancer survivors, during their “Monday Night Countdown” segment before the Broncos’ game against the Kansas City Chiefs. Kellerman, who was recently featured in our Industry Q&A, shared the following advice to aspiring field managers, “Chase your dreams and work hard. These two things can accomplish a great deal when done together. Also, going to work with a good attitude and always being ready to learn are traits that are desired and will make a huge difference when it comes to potential employment.” Kellerman is survived by his wife, Katie. ASBA Announces Publication of 2017 Edition of Sports Fields Manual
The American Sports Builders Association (ASBA), the national organization for builders, designers and suppliers of materials for running tracks, tennis courts, sports fields and court and recreational facilities, has announced the publication of the 2017 edition of Sports Fields: A Construction and Maintenance Manual.
Copies of the new edition of the book are now available in hard copy or in digital format and cost $44.95 each. Books can be ordered via the ASBA website or by contacting the association directly at 866-501-ASBA (2722).
