Thomson Receives SEE Award

Dr. John A. A. Thomson, originator of SUPERthrive, received the Lifetime Environmental Awareness Award from Sustainable Environmental Education, a nonprofit organization. Radio show host Nick Federoff presented the award at Thomson’s Vitamin Institute facilities in North Hollywood, Calif.

Field Maintenance Forums Scheduled

The Toro Co., Beacon Athletics and Diamond Pro joined forces again to present three Athletic Field Maintenance Forums. The first was held August 5 in Minneapolis, Minn., and the other two are scheduled for September 30 in Denver, Colo., and October 27 in Kansas City, Mo. The forums cover a range of topics, including aerification, topdressing and mowing; infield soils and topdressings; mound and home plate management; and on-field demonstrations. Precision Releases Adjuvant Guide, Hires McCoy

Precision Laboratories released its updatedAdjuvant Use Guide, which contains over 90 herbicides, fungicides and insecticides with matching adjuvants and use rates to optimizeperformance. Available at www.precisionlab.com adjuvantuseguide, it also includes guidelines on how to adjust pH levels.

Dan McCoy has joined Precision’s turf and ornamental sales team, assuming the role of district manager for Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Tennessee, San Juan and Puerto Rico. McCoy has over 10 years of experience in sales and has worked for Scotts and Lesco, Inc.

Lassenite Pozzolan StudyFunding Approved

The Metropolitan Water District of Southern California has selected Western Pozzolan’s project “Lassenite Pozzolan Turf Irrigation Study” under its Innovative Conservation Program. The proposed project is being conducted in conjunction with Drs. Laosheng Wu and Robert Green of the University of California, Riverside, and Gail Materials. The program provides funding to promote devices, technologies and strategies that save water and energy, reduce urban runoff and help achieve regional water supply reliability.

Bobcat Facility Awarded Certifications

Bobcat Co.’s manufacturing facility in Bismarck, N.D., has received ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001 certification by the British Standards Institution in recognition of its commitment to environmentally friendly operation and a safe, healthy work setting. The facility’s environmental management effort encompassed implementing a systematic approach to setting environmental objectives and targets and demonstrating continuous improvements in environmental performance. Bobcat also created an occupational health and safety management system that controls risks and improves performance, and demonstrated the system is working.

Penn State to Develop SportsSurface Research Facility

Penn State and FieldTurf have partnered to develop the world’s first facility dedicated to sports surface research, with a five-year commitment that will center around research on synthetic turf, running tracks and indoor sports surfaces. The new Center for Sports Surface Research will be an intercollegiate program managed within the department of crop and soil sciences in Penn State’s College of Agricultural Sciences and headed by Andrew McNitt, an associate professor of soil science.
