N.Y. DEC Finds Crumb Rubber Poses No Significant Environmental Threat

A study released by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and the Department of Health concludes that crumb rubber material used in synthetic turf fields poses no significant environmental threat to air or water quality and poses no significant health concerns. The study assessed the potential release of chemicals in crumb rubber to the environment. It can be found on the DEC’s "Waste Tire" Web page at www.dec.ny.gov/chemical/8792.html.

PACE Turf Founders Receive TOCA Award

The Turf & Ornamental Communicators Association awarded its 2009 Environmental Communicator of the Year award to Drs. Larry Stowell and Wendy Gelernter, the founders of PACE Turf. Stowell and Gelernter received the award for their efforts to promote environmental stewardship on turf in industry meetings, trade journals and their own turf management information service. Through PACE Turf, they provide extensive free public services, including an online turf research publication and turf management guidelines.

NYSTA Holds Adirondack Regional Conference

The New York State Turfgrass Association held its Adirondack Regional Conference in Lake Placid, N.Y. The featured speaker was Dr. Patricia Vittum, University of Massachusetts, who presented a session called "Pesticides: Modes of Action & Resistance Management." Dr. Marty Petrovic, Cornell University, gave presentations on "Soil Testing Interpretation" and "Soil Amendments for Sports Fields." Participants received a complimentary copy of "SportsField Management," a comprehensive guide to sports field maintenance.
