Toro Names Scholarship Winners

The Toro Company has named Sara Camuso and Nicholas McKenna as recipients of the 2008 James R. Watson scholarships. The scholarships are awarded to students who are planning a career in the sports turf industry.

Camuso is a senior majoring in turfgrass sciences at Pennsylvania State University. She has worked for the Valentine Turfgrass Research Center and the Beaver Stadium grounds crew and was an intern at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.

McKenna attends Virginia Tech, specializing in crop soils and environmental science/sports turf. He is a graduate research assistant and is currently in charge of the soccer and lacrosse facilities at Virginia Tech.

PLANET Names Cupp President

The Professional Landcare Network (PLANET) has named Jason Cupp president. Cupp has served as president-elect since November 2006. He will head the PLANET board under a new governance structure that reduces the number of board members from 23 to 15.

AstroTurf and SCG Sponsor NFHCA

AstroTurf and GeneralSports Venue have joined together with Sports Construction Group (SCG) to sponsor the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA). The partnership included sponsorship of the 2008 NFHCA Convention.

Pioneer Teams with Extreme Makeover: Home Edition

For the third time, Pioneer Athletics helped with a project for ABC-TV’s “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” in Louisville, Ky. The project was for a family with a blind and disabled son who overcame challenges to become a musician and part of the University of Louisville band. Pioneer provided paint and stencils and the band’s practice field was renovated.

Bachelor’s Degree to be Offered at SUNY Cobleskill

The New York State Education Department has approved the awarding of a new bachelor’s degree in turfgrass management at SUNY Cobleskill. The bachelor of technology in turfgrass management: sports turf management focuses on the cultivation and management of specialty grasses for sports fields and recreation areas. The new degree program will include rigorous course work in the field. The college received support for its application from the New York State Turfgrass Association.

GeneralSports Venue Selected by U.S. Communities

GeneralSports Venue, the exclusive U.S. licensee of AstroTurf brand, has been awarded the synthetic turf and other athletic surfaces contract by U.S. Communities Government Purchasing Alliance. U.S. Communities is a nonprofit organization that helps government agencies, school districts, higher education and other nonprofits reduce the cost of pur-chased goods by pooling the purchasing power of public agencies nationwide.

Dr. Duich Honored

The Turfgrass Breeders Association honored Dr. Joe Duich with the C. Reed Funk award. Duich is the fourth recipient of the award, intended to honor individuals for their dedication to turfgrass breeding and education. Duich spent close to 40 years as an educator at Penn State. He worked on the development of Penncross turfgrass variety, and later developed PennLinks, Penneagle, Seaside II and the A-G Series.

New Name for IA Show

The Irrigation Association has released a new name for its annual irrigation trade show, Irrigation Show 2008. The show will be held November 2-4 in Anaheim, Calif., and over 350 exhibitors are expected on the exhibition floor. Visit www.irrigation.org to learn more about Irrigation Show 2008.

Husqvarna to Acquire Jenn Feng

Husqvarna has signed an agreement with Jenn Feng Co. for acquisition of the company’s operation in outdoor products. Jenn Feng is a producer of chain saws and trimmers. The product offering also comprises lawn mowers, high-pressure washers and generators.

Changes at Hunter Industries

Hunter Industries has promoted Steve Abernethy to executive vice president, sales, and Gregory Hunter to executive vice president, marketing. Abernethy will have complete responsibility for domestic and international sales operations. The current marketing organization will now report to Hunter.

Davis Joins Seago

Don Davis has joined Seago International as a manufacturer’s representative. Davis’ territory will include Indiana, Kentucky, Tennessee, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and the Florida Panhandle.
