Companion Receives New EPA Label
Growth Products Ltd.’s Companion liquid biological fungicide received a new EPA label for all turfgrass and landscape use. The product contains a strain of Bacillus subtilis that uses multiple modes of action to prevent and control a range of root and foliar diseases, including anthracnose, brown patch, dollar spot, summer patch, Fusarium patch, Pythium and Phytophthora.
H.J. Baker & Bro. Opens New Facility
H.J. Baker & Bro., Inc. and its wholly owned subsidiary, Tiger-Sul Products, announced the grand opening of a state-of-the-art facility in Stockton, Calif. A ribbon-cutting ceremony was conducted by Christopher Smith, president and CEO; Matthew Smith, chairman of the board; and David M. Smith, president of new business development. A tour of the new facility showcased some of the latest technology available in the Tiger-Sul pastillation process.
West Coast Turf Donates Sod
West Coast Turf donated sod for D-Votion Field in Estrella, Ariz., and Doug Davis Field in Camp Verde, Ariz. The fields are the newest among 27 in the Arizona Diamondbacks Foundation “Diamonds Back” Youth Field Building Program. West Coast Turf is a full-service sod grower and installer with five locations in Arizona and California.
News from Toro
Toro Co. has acquired certain assets from Southern Green, Inc., Zachary, La. The acquisition of Southern Green’s line of Soil Reliever aerators will help grow Toro’s offering of cultivation equipment.
Toro and the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association Sports Turf Committee helped renovate the softball field at ELCO High School in Lancaster County, Pa. The renovations were completed in one day and included leveling and resurfacing the infield, aerating the outfield and applying topdressing to the turf. Turf Equipment & Supply Co., the local distributor, provided Toro equipment for the project.
Bayer Names New Fungicide Business Manager
Bayer Environmental Science named Jimmy Johnson as fungicide business manager for its Green Business group. He will also serve as the Bayer golf industry lead. Johnson has more than 25 years’ experience in the turf and ornamental and crop protection industries. For the past six years, he served as a golf sales representative for Bayer. Johnson holds a bachelor’s degree in animal science and a master’s in agricultural economics from the University of Arkansas.
STMA Hires New Education Position
STMA has added an assistant education manager to its staff. Kristen Althouse will work to address the need for relevant, affordable and accessible continuing education. A Penn State graduate, Althouse most recently worked as an assistant golf course superintendent and has also worked on the Penn State grounds crew for Beaver Stadium.
Husqvarna Divisions Integrate
Outdoor power equipment industry brands Husqvarna, Dixon, BlueBird and Yazoo/Kees will now be housed under one newly formed organization called Husqvarna Professional Products, Inc. It will be headed by Dave Zerfoss as president. The company will have separate dealer and distributor sales forces for individual brands, but with an integrated leadership approach. Denis Bedard will be national sales manager for Dixon and Yazoo/Kees. Jody Kerr will be national rental sales manager for BlueBird and Husqvarna. Both will report to Tony Marchese, vice president of sales.
Turf Ecosystems Announces New Platinum TE Licensees
Turf Ecosystems has expanded the availability of its Platinum TE turfgrass with the licensing of two new growers, Green Acres Turf Farm , Furman, S.C., and Pike Creek Turf Farm, Adel, Ga. Designed to address environmental challenges, the seashore paspalum does well in drought conditions. Green Acres will grow about 40 acres of Platinum TE and increase acreage as needed. Pike Creek will initially grow 25 acres of the variety.
Fahning Joins Lohmann
The Lohmann Companies have added real estate consultant Jon Fahning as a business development adviser to assist the firm in growing its design and construction businesses in the western United States. Fahning has over 15 years of experience in real estate development. He is founder and president of Diversified Development Services LLC. He graduated from Iowa State University with a bachelor’s degree in landscape architecture and land planning, with an emphasis in urban planning and real estate development.
Ducote and Watts Join BASF Turf & Ornamentals
BASF Turf & Ornamentals appointed Wayne Ducote to the position of sales specialist for Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, the Florida panhandle and Tennessee. Previously, he was a sales specialist with BASF Professional Vegetation Management (ProVM), where he spent 10 years.
Dan Watts, strategic accounts manager for ProVM, will add similar responsibilities for BASF Turf & Ornamentals. He will develop and manage relationships with channel partners for both business units nationwide. Watts has been with BASF since 2001 and has nearly 20 years of experience.
