The 24th annual STMA Conference and Exhibition, held in mid-January, drew hundreds of you to Daytona Beach, Fla., for a few busy days of networking, education and of course a little time to enjoy the balmy 80-degree weather. The trade show was one of the best attended in the association’s history, with over 1,600 attendees eager to check out all of the great products on display. In case you missed it, here’s a look at some of the highlights from this year’s show.

Four Receive Founders Awards

The Founders Awards, the STMA’s most prestigious awards, were presented to four members who embody the characteristics of STMA Founders George Toma, Harry C. Gill, Dick Ericson and Dr. William Daniel. The four award winners honored at the Annual Awards Banquet, were Amy Fouty, CSFM (Dick Ericson Award), Michael Boettcher (George Toma Golden Rake Award), Dr. Elizabeth Guertal (Dr. William H. Daniel Award), and Rich Moffitt (Harry C. Gill Award).

Student Challenge Success

This year’s Student Challenge, presented by SAFE and Hunter Industries, saw eight two-year teams and 26 four-year teams competing for $4,000 awards for their schools. The results for the two-year division were: first place, Horry-Georgetown Technical College, Team 202; second place, Mt. San Antonio College, Team 203; and in third place, Penn State University, Team 204. In the four-year division, first place went to University of Maryland, Team 412; in second place, Penn State University, Team 407; and third place went to Virginia Tech University, Team 421. Congratulations to all of this year’s winners.

Green Source Receives Innovation Award

The 2013 STMA Award for Commercial Innovation went to Green Source, Inc. The award was for their product SideKick, an innovation judged by the STMA Awards Committee to substantially enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of the sports turf manager, and make playing surfaces safer and more playable for athletes.
