Since most minor league teams lack the big-name players who usually draw crowds, they are thinking outside the box to boost attendance and coming up with some super creative promotions. These special events have become so outrageous and so popular that there’s even a Twitter page dedicated to covering all of the promos and giveaways in minor league baseball (@MiLBPromos). Here’s a rundown of some of my favorite MiLB promos this year.

Inland Empire 66ers: Zombie Apocalypse Night

The Inland Empire 66ers are capitalizing on America’s obsession with the undead by hosting Zombie Apocalypse Night this month. Players will be wearing blood-splattered zombie jerseys complete with tire tracks on the arms, making it appear that the “walkers” have been run down.

Toledo Mud Hens: Ghostbusters Night

In late May, the Mud Hens celebrated the 30th anniversary of the greatest movie of all time by hosting Ghostbusters Night. The first 2,000 fans to enter Fifth Third Field received blinking neon-green “ecto” glasses, and players donned Ghostbusters-themed jerseys, complete with proton pack straps and ectoplasm stains, which were auctioned off for charity after the game. The Mud Hens even got Peter Venkman himself, Bill Murray, to film a promo doing his best Harry Caray impersonation.

Lehigh Valley IronPigs: Bacon Gear

While not technically a promotional event, the Lehigh Valley IronPigs drew a lot of attention last February when they unveiled their uniforms for the 2014 season, which included caps featuring a prominent bacon strip logo. The uniforms, which include jerseys emblazoned with “Pigs” and pants accented with bacon-style piping, are part of the team’s “Smell The Change” initiative. For fans looking to show their Pig pride, scratchand- sniff bacon tees are available, and promise the delicious, smoky smell will linger for up to 10 to 15 washes.

State College Spikes: Salute to the ’90s Night

Now this is a story all about how . the State College Spikes had an awesome idea to throw it back to the ’90s with a Fresh Prince of Bel-Air-themed promo being held at the end of June. Carlton Banks (Alfonso Ribeiro) will be on hand to throw out the first pitch (and hopefully bust out his signature dance move). Players will be clad in graffitied jerseys, which will be raffled off for charity after the game.
