Harsco Expands Marketing Efforts

Harsco Minerals is ramping up efforts to expand its agriculture and turfgrass branch through silicon product business sectors in North America as well as globally. With growing acceptance of silicon as a beneficial element included in fertilizers and commercial successes in Brazil and China, the company is committed to expanding its presence in turf and agriculture markets in the U.S.

Golf and sports turf sectors are cited as important areas of its expansion effort. Harsco executives see a number of opportunities in these markets for EXCELLERATOR, the company’s granular calcium and magnesium silicate soil conditioner and micronutrient fertilizer package.

The company is focused on product formulation improvements and committed to expanding markets through field development and cooperative field trial efforts with turfgrass cooperators and turf specialists at major universities. To further strengthen the company’s technical development capabilities, Mary Provance-Bowley, Ph.D., recently joined Harsco as global technical development manager.

Direct Solutions Adds Gooch to Marketing Team

Direct Solutions announced the addition of Bryan Gooch as North American marketing manager. Gooch and his team will have responsibility for management of all products Direct Solutions carries across North America. Previously, Gooch worked as a marketing product manager for Agrium Advanced Technologies’ Turf & Ornamental Wholesale product lines, and also worked in progressively senior sales and marketing roles with Bayer CropScience.

SUPERthrive Inventor Celebrates 100th Birthday

Dr. John A. A. Thomson, inventor of SUPERthrive, celebrated his 100th birthday Nov. 23, 2011. Thomson developed the SUPERthrive formula in 1939 and founded Vitamin Institute to market and sell it. Seventy-two years later, he is still active in the operations. Thomson holds a doctorate degree in biochemistry and received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Lawn & Garden Marketing & Distribution Association in 2006, as well as Sustainable Environmental Education’s Environmental Awareness Award in 2009.

Koch Completes Acquisition of Agrotain

Koch Agronomic Services, LLC has completed an asset acquisition of Agrotain International, LLC’s Agrotain. Koch now offers the Agrotain stabilizer product line, and customers will see little change in terms of sales support, marketing and customer service.

Talstar XTRA Now Registered in California

FMC Professional Solutions announced it has received registration from the state of California for the sale and use of Talstar XTRA granular insecticide. The product is labeled for use against most ants (including fire ants and Argentine ants), chinch bugs, fleas, ticks, earwigs, crane flies and many other pests.

NYSTA’s Seminar a Success

The New York State Turfgrass Association’s first Winning Fields, Winning Fairways Seminar was held at Nazareth College and Irondequoit Country Club. Over 100 athletic field and golf course personnel attended, taking advantage of the opportunity to learn from some of the industry’s best. The goal of the seminar was to update athletic field managers and golf course superintendents on the latest research findings and provide necessary information for maintaining safe, high-quality turf.

Underhill Signs Spartan Distributors

Underhill International named Spartan Distributors of Sparta, Mich., as a master stocking distributor for the north-central region. Spartan, which has been in business since 1947, offers a broad range of irrigation and maintenance products for sports fields, golf courses, parks, and commercial and residential sites.

Stabilizer Solutions Hosts Field Day

Stabilizer Solutions, Inc. held a free field day to teach coaches, groundskeepers and field designers about important new techniques and products for maintaining fields at all levels of play. Hosted by Barney Lopas, head groundskeeper for the L.A. Angels of Anaheim, Calif., the half-day training session featured hands-on demonstrations. Lisa Fernandez, a three-time Olympic gold medalist and currently assistant women’s softball coach at the University of California, joined Lopas as a guest speaker.

OTF Adds Sustainability Track, Expands Trade Show Floor

The 2011 Ohio Turfgrass Foundation Conference and Show included a sustainability program. It featured panels and presentations from architects Richard Mandell, Ron Forse and Jim Nagle, irrigation expert Paul Granger and Larry Aylward from Superintendent magazine.

The trade show floor was expanded to accommodate additional exhibitors. Beyond the newly created booth space, companies wishing not to be conspicuous by their absence had several opportunities to participate in this year’s event, including Innovative Idea spaces, branding opportunities and more. The trade show floor also hosted many activities throughout the week, as a main stage was added to the back of the space.

Horizon Announced as Distributor for Rain Bird, Jacobsen

Horizon Distributors, Inc. announced it has become a distributor of Rain Bird turf irrigation products and Jacobsen turf maintenance equipment in both Florida and the Caribbean islands. Additionally, Horizon is now a distributor of Rain Bird Golf and Rain Bird International irrigation products throughout the Caribbean. The Jacobsen and Rain Bird distributor partnerships are the result of Horizon’s expansion into Florida and the Caribbean earlier this year, part of the company’s continued growth plans.
