Happy Birthday, Fenway
As I may have mentioned once (or 50 times) in this space before, I am a die-hard Red Sox fan. This year marks a special celebration for Boston: the 100th anniversary of Fenway Park. To mark this momentous occasion, National Geographic released a special program called “Inside Fenway Park: An Icon at 100,” and I cannot recommend it enough (www.pbs.org). The hour-long documentary chronicles the history of the park as well as its significance as a landmark and a symbol of America’s pastime. Woven among historic video and interviews with players, sports writers and fans, the show also delves deep into the inner workings of Fenway on a game day – a Yankees game day. The makers of this documentary did a great job introducing, and applauding, all of the hardworking people who are responsible for running the park, from food vendors, to laundry attendants, to scoreboard operators and, of course, Dave Mellor and his amazing staff.
Turf, whether natural or synthetic, is arguably the most important factor in the sports field equation. Field use demands that would have been unimaginable just decades ago are now commonplace, making proper turf selection and maintenance critical to athlete safety and field integrity. To honor this integral component, we are pleased to present a very special issue dedicated (almost) entirely to turf. Starting on page 16, our Turf Trends section features info on choosing and maintaining synthetic surfaces, tips for managing turfgrass fields, a roundtable report from some of the industry’s most well-known veterans, and an update on current turf research and development.
Of all the things athletes notice about a sports field – the height of the grass, the firmness of the ground, any bumps, dips or depressions – the greatest impact on playing conditions may come from something they never see: the irrigation system. A properly functioning irrigation system is crucial to overall success, so repairs, quality repairs, must be made to correct any problems that might be hurting irrigation performance. In this online-exclusive article, we’ll examine proper irrigation system maintenance and repair.
