Director of Stadium Projects, Mark Hickman of AT&T Stadium, which hosts the Inaugural College Football Championships on January 12, has spent years perfecting his technique for readying the field for various events.

Today, he reveals the best advice he has ever received.

“You have to back away from it and see it as the big picture.”

This came from TG Knappick, the facility operations coordinator at the Alamodome in San Antonio, which has the same synthetic turf system as AT&T. Knappick taught Hickman how to install the turf himself and was on-site the first time the crew at AT&T installed it.

Hickman says, “That was the best advice I’d ever received.”

Each time Hickman and his crew installed the field, they gained more confidence. Soon the installation was only taking about 11 hours instead of the two days the construction company could take. Now Hickman and his crew are saving the organization in the six figures a year by installing the field in-house, according to Hickman.
